Fibroids

Fibroids are the benign growths in the muscle of the womb (myometrium). Traditionally no-one knows what causes them but they tend to coexist with adenomyosis and endometriosis. They do not cause endometriosis to the best of our knowledge.

Recent studies show that most fibroids do not contain nerves. This raises the possibility that injuries to nerves in the myometrium cause fibroids. A Russian professor made this observation in 1980 and published it – in Cyrillic – in a series of papers in 1981, 1984, 1986. Our group has confirmed these observations.
