Adenomyosis occurs when the lining of the womb (endometrium) grows into the muscle of the womb (myometrium). The usual “barrier” between the two tissues is broken down. The “usual” causes include childbirth, curettage, endometrial ablation, etc
The new insights in adenomyosis result from the observation that there is an important nerve plexus at this site – between the lining of the womb (endometrium) and the muscle of the womb (myometrium). First described by Krantz in 1959, others have now produced images of these nerves (Quinn, 2002, 2007). In subsequent studies it is clear that there are injuries to these nerves in woemne with adenomyosis (Quinn, 2008, 2009).
